Rodney Sprayberry

Rodney is originally from Hartsville, South Carolina. He was raised in a Christian home and his family was active in Lakeview Baptist Church. He became a Christ follower at the age of 8 but at the age of 12, he began to feel the stirrings of a call into ministry. That calling was not fully realized until September 21, 1987. 

After graduating from college, Rodney moved to Ft Worth,Texas to attend seminary when he began serving churches in Fannin County. During that time he met his future wife, Crissi, and they were married on June 25, 1994. 

After pastoring this church from 1994-1999, Rodney and Crissi were called to The Heights Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Virginia where he served as an associate pastor from 1999-2006. In 2006, he was called back to New Zion once again. 

Rodney holds degrees from Francis Marion College (1991), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1995), and Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (2010). He also a four units of clinical pastoral education from the North Texas V.A. Healthcare system. 

Along with being a pastor, Rodney is also a hospice chaplain. Crissi is an elementary school teacher in Bells ISD so they stay busy. They also have two wonderful children, Zac and Zoe. Zac is a student at Dallas Baptist University. Zoe will attend Howard Payne University in the Fall of 2020.

Rodney loves people and he loves being a pastor/chaplain. He also loves working in the yard, running, fishing, reading, writing, and spending time with his family.

Minister of Music

Liviu Berghian

Liviu is originally fromTransylvania, Romania. He grew up in a devoted Christian family of ten in Tg. Mures.  He gave his life to Christ and got baptized in 1991, shortly after the "Iron Curtain" fell.

Liviu felt a call into ministry at the age of 20, when he became a part of a discipleship training school affiliated with Youth With A Mission--later to be sent into Bosnia in the aftermath of the Serbian war for a short mission trip.  

In 2001, following a clear call from the Lord, he and his wife came to the U.S. to study.  While working on his Bachelor of Music in Music Theory and Composition at Dallas Baptist University--which he finished in 2006--Liviu had served as a worship leader in several local churches in the DFW area.
The Lord had also been gracious in allowing him to finish his Master of Arts in Worship Leadership in 2007.  In November of 2010, he was called to be the music and youth minister at New Zion Baptist Church in Bonham, TX.
Liviu loves writing music and it is not uncommon for some of his songs to be heard in the regular Sunday morning worship.  He enjoys spending time with his family, running, rollerblading, and biking.


Student Minister

Chris Nelson

Chris and his wife Kristi are both natives of Fannin County. Both are graduated of Bonham High School. Chris grew up in Boyd Baptist Church and it is there that he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Kristi grew up in First Baptist Church of Bonham and it is there she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and a Savior. 

Chris along with Kristi have been in ministry, serving at Boyd Baptist Church for nearly 19yrs as the Children/Preteen Director. 

They have served as the New Zion Baptist Church Student Ministers since April 2013 and the Student Ministry is growing in Christ because of their service. They both have a heart for students and for God. What more could you want in a Student Minister?

They have two beautiful daughters Kelsee and Kaylee. Kelsee is married to Cory McMorris and Kaylee is engaged to Nathan Labor. Chris and Kristi, along with their family, enjoy the outdoors; camping, fishing and hunting. Its not uncommon to find Chris spending time in a pasture talking to his cattle while studying Gods word.

Katia Caylor

Katia is a native of Fannin County and grew up in New Zion Baptist Church. After graduating from Bonham High School in 2007 she completed her Associate of Science Degree before transferring to Dallas Baptist University. Katia graduated from Dallas Baptist University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Studies with of focus on youth ministry and a minor in Spanish.

Katia has served on many mission trips with New Zion Baptist Church to Mexico, Colorado, and South Dakota. Her passion for missions lead her on an eleven month journey called The World Race with Adventures in Missions. Throughout this journey Katia served on a team of about 40 people from all over the United States and Canada as they worked in Haiti, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. This was a very spiritual journey where she learned about Godly community, drew closer to God, and saw God at work across the nations. 

Upon returning, Katia began teaching high school and junior high Spanish as she loves working with teenagers and at risk youth. After four years of teaching, Katia felt called to serve as the Administrative Assistant at New Zion. She desires to serve the Lord and help advance the Kingdom of God by helping churches reach their ministry goals through the gifts He has given her.

Katia lives with her mother, Rhonda, and grandmother, Alice. They love to travel together and serve in the church. Katia enjoys reading, music, camping, traveling, art, movies, languages, and photography. 


Dan and Pat Pate

Dan and his wife Pat live in Bonham, TX. Both were blessed to be born into and raised in Christian homes. 

Dan was born in Honey Grove and lived in Windom until graduating from East Texas State University in Commerce, TX. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Windom and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior when he was seventeen years old. He does his best to live a life that is pleasing to Jesus by studying the Bible and setting an example for his family and friends. 

Pat was born in Mesa, AZ. She lived in Odessa, TX until she was fourteen and then her family moved to Ector, TX. After graduating from high school, she met Dan and they were married in August 1969. 

At this time, Dan was in the service and they spent a year and a half in Turkey. After returning to the states they made their home in Bonham. They became members of Trinity Baptist Church in Bonham in 1978. During a revival in 1987, Pat felt the Holy Spirit leading her to renew her vows with the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior even though she had accepted Him as Savior when she was eight years old in Odessa. She has always raised her two girls in church and also her grandkids. She has always told them accepting Christ as their Savior is the most important decision they will ever make in their life.

Dan and Pat both have a master's degree in education. Dan coached basketball and taught all levels of science in high school at Sam Rayburn ISD. Pat taught 5th and 6th grade math at Bonham ISD. 

In 2001, they felt led to become members of NZBC. After retiring from teaching, the janitor's position became available. They have always worked and enjoy working together. It is something they can do to serve the Lord. 

They have two daughters, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. All but he two year old have accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior.
